A Day in the Cells
Sep 30 @ 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

This event will involve a free tour of the cells in Chipping Norton police station and a talk about the Ascott Martyrs, whose imprisonment caused a major public disturbance in the town in the nineteenth century.

The Ascott Martyrs were sixteen women who were imprisoned in 1873 for supporting their striking farm worker husbands in the Oxfordshire village of Ascott Under Wychwood. The women were released due to a reprieve from Queen Victoria.

Their legacy today is that picketing was made legal and local religious leaders were no longer Magistrates. The educational project aims to raise the profile of the historical event to ensure a more permanent tribute for descendants and the wider village community.
